END OF YEAR SUMMARY - 2005

While updating the website, and in particular adding this page, it seemed logical to add a summary of our achievements over the year.

Between us we have fished 21 matches and caught over 6558lbs, which gives us an average catch each over the year of nearly 600lbs. Not bad for a small club which usually only has about 10 people fishing.

Personally my results were not so good. I only fished 14 matches and some of those I missed were where the weights were really good. I caught 262-7-0 which gives me an average of only 18-11-6 per match. Not good enough but getting better, and I did have my first "ton". Oh well roll on next year.

Coach House Lake, Nupers Hatch, Stapleford Abbotts, Essex

I've never had much joy with the fishing at this venue and so I never particularly look forward to it, except of course for the full English breakfast and afternoon tea!  I was therefore rather reluctantly dragged along there a week or so before the match by Bob Edwards for some tuition. But I won't have to be dragged in the future. I learnt more in the 15 minutes that I sat watching and listening to Bob than I had in all my previous visits.

During a full day session, on a not particularly warm day, we caught just about every type of fish in the lake using most methods and most baits.

Come the day of the match I new just what baits and methods I was going to use and was really up for it.  The only problem was that the weather forecasters got it wrong again! The 6 deg.C forecast overnight turned into a heavy frost and frozen lake, but after some vigorous exercise breaking and clearing ice (and another full English breakfast) we got down to it.

The quality of the fishing was much as we expected after the freeze up but at least we all caught and I managed to push the Chairman into last place - just. Jack beat me again though.

Leggats Lake, near East Grinstead - Small Lake

After a spell of dodgy weather we decided to give the small lake a try. Very nice little lake but conditions were against us, unless you happened to be where the fish were holed up. Thus Biagio caught 34-11-0 and 4 of us went home early.

At least Jack didn't beat me!

Buxted, Nr Uckfield, Sussex

I'd never been here before so went with an open mind. Nice little lake. Well tucked away, although it was a bit exciting getting down to some of the swims. After some initial manoeuvring around the fishing platform that was about to collapse, I managed to get into it and put together a net of mostly feeder caught carp and lo and behold I came 4th AND I beat Jack by quite a long way for a change.

Grand Union Canal, Section 4B, Chelmscott

I've been looking forward to this one for quite some time now. Although I've never done particularly well, it's always shown a lot of potential with some nice bags of bream and carp along with the inevitable silvers.

Come the day and it was blowing a gale. Some of the swims closest to the parking area looked like they were at Brighton beach on a bad day. My usual indifferent draw meant that all the likely swims I new were gone by the time I got to them. Time for a bit of a walk then past all the areas I new and into uncharted territory. Good job I was travelling "light".

Walked around a bend at the end of my tether and it was like going into a different world. What a Result! No wind. Sun shining. Some juicy looking swims. Apart from one very heavy downpour it stayed that way all day. I even managed to put together a reasonable bag of fish which put me in 3rd place. Shame about the walk (crawl) back to the car though.

Manor Farm, Headcorn, Kent

After our previous visit, I was not looking forward to this match one little bit. But in the event I managed to put together a catch of carp and silvers for 18-7-8 and 5th place. Perhaps I'll give it another go next year.

Arrans, Ingatestone, Essex - House side

After a reasonable draw on a peg which often produces winning weights I settled down and proceeded to stuff it up big time. Managed to catch carp and bits to weigh-in 23-7-8 and last place! Mark won with over 118lbs. Jack beat me again. This is becoming a habit.

Sounds a bit of a grueller.

Never been here before but it sounded OK. It was, if you were in the right place and of course I wasn't! Almost came last again with only 2-8-0

Private Lake, Nr Horsmonden, Kent

Now you know what they say in show business about never working with children and animals, well it applies to fishing as well! I took along my other half's cousin, Jack. Nice lad for a teenager. Keen on fishing. Never fished a match before. I thought it would give him a bit of a treat. It did.

This is a nice lake, with plenty of shelter from the elements and better still its full of fish which will even feed if you have to break the ice. I've never done particularly well here but that's not unusual.

Anyway we settled down for a nice day. Spent some time showing Jack the ropes, right methods, all that stuff. He had a great day AND HE BEAT ME! Thanks to a carp of 6lb in the last 15 minutes or so he virtually doubled his weight to 13-15-8 leaving me trailing along miles behind in last place again with 9-5-0. Don't they teach youngsters any manners nowadays?

Seriously though, it was great to see him enjoying himself. I hope he enjoyed it enough to come again despite the ribbing I took off everybody else.

Manor Farm, Headcorn, Kent

Least said about this one the better.  Pretty looking lake but full of weed, where I was anyway. Stuck it out for a few hours catching miniscule silvers no matter what method I tried. Packed up early and stomped off in a huff.

Private Lake, Nr Horsmonden, Kent

I missed this one too as I was still trying to earn some brownie points with her indoors as I had only just got back from the week away with "the boys" fishing in Bridgnorth. Still not caught a river barbel though.

Seems to have been a good day out.  Biagio won with 103-8-8.

This match was supposed to have been at Mushroom Farm, Falkenvil except they managed to double book us with a big match!

Rockells Farm, Nr Saffron Walden, Essex

I missed this one as I was going off to Bridgnorth fishing the following weekend with "the boys".

Place lived up to its reputation with over 1000lb of fish caught including 6 people in the hundreds. Can't wait till next year.

Leggats Lake, near East Grinstead

I've been looking forward to this match for a few months now, mainly because I found the lake in the first place and it always seems to fish well except in cold weather. In the event I drew an area I hadn't fished before and then proceeded to mess it up. Managed 5th with 31-2-0 against top weight from Keith at 47-4-0

Newland Hall, Nr Chelmsford, Essex - Moat Lake

It is no exaggeration to say that I am chuffed. After a few bad sessions and even worse match results I decided on getting back to basics.

I persuaded Bob that I needed some help mastering some of the fishing techniques I'm not to good on and oh boy did it pay off! I managed to come 4th with a catch of 105-1-0 against a top weight from Brian of 143-15-8.

Not only was this a vast improvement on my recent performances, it was my first match catch over 100lbs. True, the place did fish it's socks off. Between 13 of us we weighed in 1121-12-0 giving an average weight of 86-4-10. Can't wait for next year.

Elphicks, Horsmonden, Kent - Sandwich Lake

After the bad weather last year when it blew a gale and poured with rain all day, I was at least hoping for a dry day.

My usual dodgy draw saw me fishing the back side of the lake which is not very popular in colder weather because it is so shallow. Only weighed 9-0-8 giving 12th place out of 13. Still I did catch a couple of small grass carp.

Better luck next time?

Nice lake which always looks full of potential. Unfortunately I never seem to make use of that potential and this time was no exception. I came last with 9-0-0 against a top weight from Keith of 51-7-8. One day I'll get it right.

Claygate, Nr Horsmonden, Kent - Lake Eva

This match was postponed from 6th March due to a frozen lake and apart from John and Brian who caught over 8lb each, most people had a pretty torrid time. I'm glad I was otherwise engaged.
