Pittlands Lakes – Lake A - Silver Fish Match

Our new season started at Pittlands Lakes on Lake A. A warm and sunny day greeted us, although the wind at times proved to be a bit awkward.

We also had our 2013 season presentation awards at Pittlands whilst we were there. Many thanks to them for letting our club use your lovely facilities.

The silver fish matches here have always produced close finishes in the past but not this time!

Warren Peaty returned a tremendous 85-0-0, a truly marvellous catch, very well done Warren.

Mark Beard was a distant second with 62-4-0, Dave Barr was third with 40-12-0, and Ross McGilvery with 28-13-0. Simon Glendinning our guest for the day weighed in a very creditable 43-10-0. Well done to you all.

Monk Lakes – Lake 2

A cold and sunny morning greeted us at Monk Lakes after a frosty night for our match on Lake 2.

Although Monk Lakes is a beautiful place to fish at I’ve never enjoyed much success here. You need to draw one of the better pegs for a consistent day’s sport, and for some strange geographical reason if there’s any indifferent weather around you’ll get it here! This was certainly the case today.

As we prepared for our match the sun was shining. The match whistle was blown, the sun disappeared, the wind started blowing heavily and with intermittent hail showers and rain all day the weather gods had decided our fate.

We welcomed new guests Jonathan, son Ryan, and Daren who had joined us for the day and they all enjoyed good sport.

I was pegged between the ever consistent ‘Blower’ brothers who had also joined us for this match as guests. I’ve known both Steve and Ken for a number of years and always enjoy their company, with friendly and consistent banter all day long I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Ken was enthusiastically telling me about the “Alcohol” flavoured expander pellets he had so lovingly prepared, only to rename them “Suicide” pellets when they failed to induce a bite! He made me smile.

Needless to say, the final whistle was blown, the wind dropped, the sunshine reappeared and as we weighed in some close weights were recorded.

Mark Beard won the day with 70-5-0, Biagio Scialo was second with 67-7-0, Ross McGilvery was third with a fine silvers net of 65-0-0 and Bob Edwards was fourth with 46-4-0. Well done everybody.

Arrans – House Side

Warren Peaty caught a fantastic and well deserved 303-13-0 on our latest match, very well fished Warren.

Second was Criss Kochevar with a new personal best of 167-2-0, third was Terry Benson with 164-3-0, and fourth was Bob Farrer (Despite starting Late, due to a broken satnav!) again with a new personal best of 131-3-0.

Well done to you all.

Orchard Place Farm – Lake 5

This was a late change of venue due to unforeseen circumstances, and LGAC wishes to thank the owners of Orchard Place Farm for accommodating our club at such short notice.

Bob Edwards won the day with an exceptional 251-9-0, very well done Bob. Warren Peaty was second with 185-12-0, third was Mark Beard with 170-15-0, and fourth was Ross McGilvery with 156-0-0.

Well done to all.

Bury Hill Fisheries - Old Lake

Blustery winds and occasional showers made this a difficult day. Fishing the long pole needed to reach the bream was nigh on impossible and most people reverted to various legering techniques.

The bites when you did get them were very finicky; such is the nature of bream fishing. Just when you thought you had the answer the bream moved the goal posts. By changing to various different baits and hook sizes a few extra fish were landed. The morning provided the best sport but in the afternoon the fish generally shut up shop.

Despite this some decent bream weights were caught. Mark Beard won the day with 60-7-0, Criss Kochevar was second with 40-2-0, Doug Watts was third with 34-6-0, and Dave Barr was fourth with 32-0-0.

Criss Kochevar, Doug Watts, and Ross McGilvery all caught specimen bream of 5-2-0, 4-2-0, 3-11-0 respectively. Well done to all.

Shannon's - Match Lake

Glorious sunshine greeted us on this beautiful venue with high temperatures and virtually no wind was forecast all day.

With carp cruising on the surface, we wondered if the fish were more interested in sunbathing than feeding; only time would tell.

We needn’t have worried; most people had a very good day’s sport, with the two top places only separated by ten pounds. (One average fish for this lake!)

Paul Veal was first with 168-2-0, Ross McGilvery was second with 158-8-0, Biagio Scialo was third with 149-12-0, and fourth was Dave Barr with 135-8-0. Well done to all.

Tylers Common - Ash Lake

Another warm sunny day greeted us at Tylers Common on Ash Lake. The carp had recently finished spawning and we anticipated a really good days sport for all. Within minutes of the match starting, poles and rods were bending all around the lake and it was obvious the carp were going to feed well.

The top seven results all recorded over 200 pounds and in the end Warren Peaty continued his good form by winning the match with a new club lake record of 273-10-0, many congratulations Warren. Bob Edwards was a close second with 268-14-0, Terry Benson was third with 251-4-0 and Dave Barr was fourth with 219-1-0. Lost fish on the day made so much difference to the results. Warren also won the golden pool on the day. Well done all. Thank you to Paul Veal for sorting us out with a new set of weigh tripods.

Finally, Bob E’ and Ross recently visited Anne Noonan the wife of John who passed away before Christmas. Anne has not enjoyed good health recently and it was decided by the members to have a remembrance/charity match for John. A big thank you to everyone who all contributed to over £270 pounds to this worthy cause.

Hartley Lands – Nick's Lake

Bob Edwards returned a superb 242-13-0 to easily win this match at this fantastic fishery, very well fished Bob. Ross McGilvery was second with 168-15-0, Terry Benson was third with 124-11-0 and Mark Beard was fourth with 120-12-0.

The fish fed very well and the good thing about this lovely lake is that you can never be sure what you’re going to catch next. One minute you can be catching carp and the next any one of the silverfish varieties. This makes it a real challenge as you have to make good decisions to attain a good match weight, but you’ll never be short of bites! Just about every bait and fishing method produced fish but every time I’ve fished it I’ve been left with that nagging feeling that I should have done better and it makes me want to come back for more.

Orchard Place Farm – Lake 6

The changeable conditions played a big part in the outcome of this match. One moment the sun was out, then it clouded over, the wind was blowing from all directions and finally the rain decided to arrive just as we were weighing in. To add to this the water ventilators were left on and most swims were like trotting a float down a river! Given this and the fact that F1’s can be the most fickle of fish at times tackle presentation was very important if you wanted to keep the bites coming.

Bob Edwards continued his run of good form to weigh in a very well deserved 163-8-0. Ross McGilvery was second with 132-11-0; Mark beard was third with 123-4-0 and fourth was Terry Benson with 109-6-0. Well done everybody.

I like this fishery very much and it’s not all about F1 carp. Tench, bream, barbel, perch, as well as small mirror and common carp give the angler a varied choice. Yes it can be challenging at times, but if you can work it out on the day and work hard at your tactics you will be rewarded with a fine net of fish.

Tricklebrook Fishery – Match Lake

This was our clubs first visit to this lovely venue in Five Oak Green in the Kent countryside. The specimen lake holds some seriously sized carp as can be seen in photos in the canteen. Nigel cooks a tasty bacon sandwich and runs a beautiful fishery.

The Match Lake is an unusual shape and can be a challenge to peg out, but its fish stocks of various carp and silverfish with some enormous roach definitely offer the match person a nice alternative to the norm, but they don’t give themselves up easily and have to be properly fished for.

Bob Edwards fished a fine match from a peg with loads of fishy features and duly won with a top weight of 138-5-0, Biagio Scialo was second with 96-3-0, Dave Barr was third with 61-7-0 and Terry Benson was fourth with 58-2-0. Well done all.

Sumners Ponds – Match Lake

We always look forward to our yearly visit to Sumners Ponds. As well as the good results we’ve had over the years, there’s every chance not only to improve your personal best match weight but also to catch some real whackers!

Dave Barr caught several large carp on our latest match at Sumners, the smallest was 14-15-0 and the largest was 26-0-0! (Pic Below) Amazing really when you consider Dave tempted the biggest fish on a small cube of luncheon meat to a size 16’s hook on 6.5lb hook length whilst method fishing, top angling Dave and thoroughly deserved.

Biagio Scialo caught a new P.B. and was top weight of the day with 262-3-0, well fished Biagio. Second was Warren Peaty with 242-5-0, Dave Barr was third with 187-0-0 and Mark Beard was fourth with 179-2-0. Well done everybody.

Monk Lakes – Lake 4

After the massive weights achieved at our last match at Sumners Ponds, this was a more sedate affair. That’s not to say it wasn’t enjoyable, it was, but those who made the most of the opportunities afforded to them came out best as some of the competing weights were very close indeed. Very gusty westerly winds and the odd downpour made things ‘Interesting’ as most had to revert to close range tactics to enjoy any consistent sport.

Lake 4 has always been an unkind lake to me. You either have to draw very favourably or rely on the favoured pegs not to produce. As my drawing arm has been next to useless of late, the latter came to my rescue! By nurturing and careful feeding of the swims and keeping fish losses down to a minimum and employing tactics by thinking outside the box it was possible to put a good weight together. I have always believed in fishing to ones strengths, but occasionally this stereotypical approach has its downfall and this day was definitely a case of changing my stubborn thinking around.

Mark Beard won the day with 141-5-0. Biagio Scialo was second with 131-3-0, third was Dave Barr with 108-10-0 and fourth was Terry Benson with 101-10-0. Well done all.

Finally I would just like to say ‘thank you’ to all the efforts our membership and our guests contribute to making our days fishing possible. A successful club is only possible if all partake. I was reminded of this when listening to the moans and groans which filled the air from members of another club fishing an adjacent lake to us and made me really appreciate that I was a member of LGAC!

Hartley Lands – Nick's Lake

The more I match fish Nicks Lake the more I enjoy it. Not only is it situated in my favourite part of Kent where I spent many a happy hour fishing its various lakes and rivers, but I also learnt how to appreciate the beautiful countryside that’s relatively close to my London home.

We decided to fish just the one side of the lake; all the pegs were in a row. To be fair I don’t mind where I draw on this lake as any peg is capable of winning on the day, and with such an abundance of different fish to catch it’s easy to see why Hartley Lands is such a popular venue.

As mentioned before, my drawing arm has been badly letting down of late, as so it seemed today, but more of that in a moment. The swim that was to be my home for the day was the only one without an island to fish too. But it was an end peg, with plenty of open water and a warm wind had been blowing into my corner of the lake for the past few days. Now end pegs in my experience can either be very good or complete rubbish. As I sat there I noticed subtle movements amongst the collected surface scum so maybe I would have a good day after all.

A busy morning on the method feeder followed by an even busier afternoon on the short pole made for a really enjoyable day, and the weather was kind to us as well!

Bob Edwards finished in first place with an excellent catch of 172-13-0, well fished Bob. Mark Beard was a close second with 168-12-0, Ross McGilvery was third with 161-13-0, and Dave Barr was fourth with 111-7-0. Well done to all. A 7-1-0 barbel caught on the pole made my day as well as an excellent 2-1-0 perch caught by Bob E’ just shows what a brilliant lake this is. I can’t wait to come back.

Orchard Place Farm – Lake 5

Thankfully I don’t make it a regular habit of being completely out fished from the next peg. When it does happen you just have to raise your cap, congratulate your opponent and say "Well done". Bob Edwards presented this to me and I was taught a valuable lesson – he nearly doubled my weight.

Bob Edwards and Warren Peaty fished a brilliant match, which Bob won by just over seven pounds from Warren, 201-4-0 to 194-3-0. Congratulations to you both, thoroughly deserved.

Elsewhere, Dougie Watts finished third with a well-deserved 119-7-0 and Mark Beard was fourth with 108-9-0. A special mention for our guests on the day, Sid and Simon who finished with 113-11-0 and 113-9-0 respectively. Very well fished.

Chart – Match Lake

Autumn is finally here, my favourite time of the fishing year. With day time temperatures still into the 20’s the Chart carp fed avidly. This beautiful Kent fishery is one of our favourite haunts. The carp fight very hard all the way to the net and you need to get a good start or you’ll find yourself playing catch up for the rest of the day.

Bob Edwards and Dave Barr had caught over 100 pounds by the mid-day break. I couldn’t catch the carp regularly on a close feeder line and had to revert to fishing to the island, a 60 yard chuck, these fish were smaller and felt I wouldn’t challenge for the main places.

The afternoon session would change all that as finally I started to catch closer in and the fish were bigger. The difference a slight ripple on the water makes is amazing!

Bob Edwards fished a superb match to win with a new club venue weight of 263-8-0, very well fished Bob. Dave Barr was second with 245-3-0, and Mark Beard was third with 238-3-0, Ross McGilvery finished fourth with a new personal best weight of 216-4-0. Well done all.

Dougie Watts also recorded a new personal best of 193-0-0, his smiling face said it all, well done mate! With five weights greater than 200 pound and over 1600 caught on the day Chart had once again showed what a great venue it is.

Tylers Common – Willow Lake

We usually fish Willow Lake in early November as the venue produces good consistent sport for all our members. This year we booked the lake a month earlier and what a good decision that proved to be!

Recent Angling Times results showed that Tylers Common has been fishing very well, and a practice/pleasure session by some of our members suggested this to be the case.

I was recently talking to Terry Benson and he was saying that he’d had a relatively quiet season regarding his results. Now anyone who knows Terry is aware that he is one of the nicest persons you could wish to know. He always helps out wherever he can and is a real asset to our club, and on top of that he’s a very capable match angler too! As one of the senior members of our club I have watched Terry’s progress with interest. Over the seasons his results have improved tremendously and he always seems to have his best results in the latter part of the season. He already holds a number of club records including the best individual club record one day weight set at Arran’s Lake in 2013, and on Willow Lake, true to form, he set about improving his considerable C.V!

I was to witness another lesson from being completely out fished from the next peg. Terry caught a staggering 518-1-0 and in the process broke a number of club records; new personal best by over 100 pounds, new individual club record one day weight, new club venue record and top weight of 2014. Many congratulations Terry thoroughly deserved. Second place with an equally impressive catch and new personal best of 501-13-0 was Bob Edwards, very well fished Bob. Mark Beard was third with 316-1-0; Criss Kochevar was fourth again with a new personal best of 271-0-0.

New personal bests were also set by Ross McGilvery, 248-8-0, and Dougie Watts, 232-1-0, very well done to you both. With four matches to go it looks like being another record breaking year for our total match caught weight. Well done everyone, on another remarkable day.

Arrans – House Side

The 14 who fished this match produced a club record one day total weight of 3787-8-0, over 270-0-0 per angler. Simply, stunning! We have already passed last year’s club total weight and still have three matches to go.

On the individual front, first was Dave Barr who fished a brilliant match to set a new club venue record and new P.B. of 433-9-0, many congratulations Dave, very well deserved. Second was Terry Benson with 378-4-0; third was Bob Edwards with 345-12-0 and fourth with a new P.B. was Ross McGilvery with 281-0-0. Paul Veal also set a new P.B with 191-6-0. Well done all of you.

A special mention to our four guests on the day, Rob Smith who weighed in 409-13-0, Phil Stone 381-14-0, Wendy Smith 264-15-0 and Dave Ford 85-3-0, very well done all of you and thank you for fishing with our club on Sunday.

Orchard Place Farm – Lake 6

This fantastic fishery offers just about everything an angler could wish for. From the carp angler to the match angler the fishing is second to none, and to top it all it’s such a beautiful place to spend the day with friends. With sunshine and virtually no breeze, I really enjoyed the day.

Lake 6 holds a good head of fish of most species, but if you like a challenge then in my opinion the lakes F1’s will give you just that. This most fickle of fish can one moment be the easiest to catch and the next can have you literally pulling your hair out!

Bob Edwards continued his fine season with his eighth match win with a weight of 133-0-0, very well fished Bob. Terry Benson was second with 105-10-0; Dave Barr was third with 82-3-0 and fourth was Ross McGilvery with 69-5-0. Well done all.

Hartley Lands – Reservoir

The weather was absolutely dreadful. It rained all day and the temperatures dropped over 10 degrees during the duration of the match.

This is one of my favourite venues, and after a slow start the carp and the silverfish fed and at the end of the match some decent weights were caught. The carp fight so hard and every fish had to be teased towards the net after a dogged fight. Being a very good average size each one is very worth catching.

Biagio Scialo won the day with 101-13-0, very well fished and fully deserved. Mark Beard was second with 96-7-0; Dave Barr was third with 89-12-0 and fourth was Terry Benson with 52-5-0.

Our guests for the day Daren Chaston and Simon Glendinning also had good weights of 90-0-0 and 64-6-0 respectively. Well done to all.

Pittlands Lakes – Lake A - Silver Fish Match

After consuming the hearty breakfast on offer at this lovely fishery we were to fish our final match of the season.

We’ve introduced a couple of silver fish only matches into our annual calendar the last two years and they have proved to be very popular with our members.

This small intimate lake offers the very best in silver sport. Catches to over forty pound are needed to win these matches. Indeed 85 pound was needed to win our last silvers match here! Decent size skimmers, roach, tench and some enormous perch are on offer if you can get your tactics right.

The secret to success here is avoiding the large carp that also inhabit the lake. As we’ve had such a warm year with no real frosts leading up to our visit the carp were still very active. Hooking these relatively large fish on light tackle is entertaining but can take ages to land, and of course doesn’t count towards your weight. I managed to land a couple of lovely large carp but they also proved to unsettle my swim as was the case with many people.

Despite this some very good weights were caught. Warren Peaty was first with an excellent 43-0-0, very well deserved Warren. Bob Edwards was a close second with 40-8-0, Mark Beard was third with 26-1-0 and Dave Barr was fourth with 22-0-0. A couple of sizeable perch were also weighed in by Bob Farrer and Biagio Scialo of 1-12-0 and 1-11-0 respectively. Well done to all.

Another record breaking season has come to an end. A new club record weight of 23, 955-10-0 was caught. A staggering figure, but when you consider the very good class of angler we have within our venue regulars it comes as no surprise. Many congratulations to all our competition/trophy winners and participants, you are all fine anglers. Individual achievements may be seen within our results pages.

Finally a personal thanks to all our committee, captains, scales persons, members and guests for making this a special year. Your company, competition and banter are much appreciated. A special thank you to Ross, Biagio, Bob E’, Terry and our web site specialist Mark Wheatcroft for all the hard work you do behind the scenes, and to anyone else who helps towards the running of our successful club.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all and your loved ones a happy Christmas and a prosperous 2015, and I look forward to doing it all again next year.
